Classifieds/Auctions Help Page

Finding what you are looking for

What does"View by Subject" mean?

If you are looking for a specific item, like a steel drum or electric guitar, or maybe a Beanie Baby collectible, you would want to search by Subject. When you click on the "View by Subject" button you will be able to choose from a few broad categories, such as Vehicles, Merchandise, or Personals/Announcements. After selecting one of these categories, you will be brought to a page that contains links to ads in more specific categories. You can click on any of these category links to browse the ads that you are interested in.

What does"View by Region" mean?

If you are looking for something near home or in a certain geographic location (maybe you want to vacation in Hawaii), you will want to search by Region.

When you click on the "View by Region" button, you can select the region for the ads you will be browsing.
  • You can select to browse ads from a few major US cities
  • You can choose to view ads for the US and Canada by area code or State/Province
  • You can view international ads by the whole country of origin.

You then select the broad category that interestes you and you see all the ads from the location you are interested in.

What is this "More Info"?

If you see a Buyline that sounds like it is what you are looking for, you can find out more about the ad by clicking on the "More info" link.

When you look at a page full of ads, you only see a small part of the ad. You can click on the undelined "More Info" to find out lots more about the ad. Users can have pictures, long descriptions, their phone number and anything else they want you to know in the "more Info" field.

The "More Info" page also has a form where you can email the person who took out the ad to ask them a question about the item or to make an offer.

Replying to Ads and Auctions

How do I reply to an ad?

Read the "More Info" about any ad and you will be given a form to reply to the person who submitted the ad. If they also gave out another contact method (such as their telephone number or US mail address) in the ad, you can contact the person that way if you wish.

EPage does not keep any copies of this email. If you lose an email address, we cannot help you to reconstruct your past messages.

What happens when I reply to an ad?

We send your message to the person who took out the ad.

When you reply via the form onthe "More Info" page, we will forward your message (along with your return e-mail address) to the person who took out the ad. You will also receive a carbon copy of this letter for your records. There is no need to reply to this carbon copy. EPage values your privacy. We do not collect email addresses and we will not ever sell email addresses. Beleieve us, we get more junk mail than you ever will!

If you do NOT receive the carbon copy your e-mail address was probably entered incorrectly; in this case you should try again.

EPage does not keep any copies of this email. If you lose an email address, we cannot help you to reconstruct your past messages.

How do I bid on an Auction?

To place a bid, simply select the "more info" for that item from the buyline listing. You will need to enter you e-mail address and password. If you don't have a password already, you can type the one you want there anyhow and we will set you up immediately.

Enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the item. Once you make a bid, you cannot take it back. Do not place too many bids, it is your responsibility to pay. This amount will be kept secret! Our auto-bidding software will place bids up to your maximum, but never more than enough to beat the highest bid. It works like this:

  1. Imagine that the present high bid is $50.
  2. you bid up to $60
  3. But the present winning bidder has authorized up to $75
  4. The other bidder will immediately have the top bid at $61
  5. To be top bidder, you must bid higher than anyone else

Our AuctionBot software will email you as soon as your maximum bid is outbid by another bidder. It is possible that you may not read this email until after the auction has closed, and you may not have the opportunity to increase your bid. Unless you read your email continually, you should bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay for an item when you make your original bid. This will also prevent you from getting carried away by auction fever and spending more than you can afford!

Posting Ads and Auctions

How do I post an ad or auction?

Click on the "Post Ad" button from any page. Follow the instructions on each page.

Don't worry, it's really easy. If you make a mistake, you can usually hit the "Back" button on your browser and make changes. Also, you can always change or delete the ad from your account page at any time.

You will have to enter your e-mail address and password to place an ad. If this is your first time, we will ask for some more information to make taking ads out easier next time. This will also allow you to monitor your ad status, change, renew or delete your ad, or include a picture with your ad. You can use your email address in place of your ID. If you do not have an ID, or have forgotten your password, just enter your email address and press proceed.

You can advertise the existence of your auction with the URL "http://epage.com/js/mi?ad=####" where #### is the number assigned to your ad or auction.

Why do I have to enter all this stuff?

To place your ad in the best place for users to find it, you must select the category for your ad. The first step is to choose the broad category that you think is the best fit for your ad. Then you need to select the narrow category that makes the most sense for your ad or auction.

You will need to choose the type of ad you want to take out. Options are:

You will need to fill out all the information on the posting form for best results.

The label is a one or two word key to help someone quickly see what your ad is about. If you are advertising a car, the year and model is perfect. If you are advertising a collectible, the type (like "Rare Book", "Barbie", or "Disney") would work well. If this is a "wanted" type of ad, this makes a great label too. Do not put HTML in this section, your ad will be deleted

The buyline is a short sentence where you catch the interest of the readers. Generally, it is good to include the price here as well as a decent description of the item for sale. Do not put HTML in this section, your ad will be deleted

The More Info is where you put anything and everything you want to tell someone about your object for sale (or wanted). Feel free to type in full and complete sentences. We have given you enough room to describe anything you might ever need to talk about, so you don't have to abbreviate or cut yourself short. Some HTML is acceptable here, but if it crashes the page, the offending HTML (and possibly some fo the ad) will be deleted. You can link out of the ad from here if you wish. You can even add a picture to the classified or auction for free through your account management page.

Select any display options you might want to pay for and click on the Submit button. There are no refunds for ads deleted prior to expiration

What is a "Page Top" ad?

When users view classifieds by a local region (likely their local area) "page top" ads will be displayed at the top of the screen, before any other ads. If the user if viewing by subject, "page top" ads will also appear at the top of that view. Basicallly, "page top" ads will be at the top of any page where they would have normally been seen.

What is an "all region" ad?

When users view classifieds by a local region (likely their local area), "all region" ads will be displayed after the regional ads, regardless of the region selected.

What is a Classified Ad?

An EPage classified ad is just like the newspaper classifieds. Users read EPage browsing for ads that interest them.

With a classified ad, you are selling something and our users come in and make offers on it. It is up to you to decide what offer to take, or to wait for a better one later.

Classifieds usually last 30 days and are free to post.

What is an Auction Ad and how does it work?

Auctions are much like classifieds, but here you are selling to the highest bidder over a limited time.

Auctions last from 4 to 14 days. You set the starting price, and if you want, a minimum acceptable price, called a "reserve". Over the duration of the auction, users make bids and our AuctionBot software automatically determines the highest bidder. At the conclusion of the auction, you are required to sell to the highest bidder above your reserved price.

Auctions are 100% free. The only time you owe a fee is you choose an optional display enhancement feature (color background, page top ad, etc.).

What is a Reserve Price?

The reserve price is the minimum price you will sell for.

Some buyers do not like reserve auctions because they do not know if they will get the item. Sellers like the reserved price auctions because they can start the auction at a price far below the minimum sales price to get the bidding started.

Over the duration of the reserved price auction, users make bids and our software automatically determines the highest bidder. At the conclusion of the auction, you are required to sell to the highest bidder above your reserve price. If your reserve price has not been met, we will still forward the highest bidders information to you in case you want to make the sale anyhow. You do not have to sell to the bidder below your reserve price, but our fee will be based on that bid.

Reserved price auctions are free to post. The only time you owe a fee is you choose an optional display enhancement feature (color background, page top ad, etc.). If bidding does not reach your reserved price, we will still forward the high bid amount and winners e-mail to you.

What is a Group Auction?

A group auction is just like a regular auction, but here you have more than one item for sale.

Users can come in and bid on one or more of the items. All the bidders are considered to be a group making a purchase. Each member of the winning "group" of bidders will receive the item at the lowest winning bid of the entire "group". As with all auctions, you are required to sell to winning bidders who meet or beat your reserve price.

For example: There is an auction for five widgets. There are three bidders. The lowest winning bid is $53 and the highest is $125. All three get the widget for $53. If there are more than five widgets bid on, then the highest bids get the first five widgets. But, the lowest winning bid still determines the sales price. If the lowest winning bid is now $57, then all five widgets get sold for $57 each. Your fee is based on a total transaction of 5 x $57, or $285, and would be $6.20 (50 cents plus 2%).

Group auctions are free to post. The only time you owe a fee is you choose an optional display enhancement feature (color background, page top ad, etc.).

What is a Countdown Auction?

A Countdown Auction is one where the price starts at the high price and slowly drops toward the sellers minimum price. As soon as a bidder matches the price, the item is sold and the auction is complete. A Countdown auction is sometimes called a "Dutch" auction.

When you take out a Countdown auction, you enter an opening price (similar to an asking price in a classified) and a low price. The low price is the lowest amount you will accept. The Countdown auction price will slowly drop from your opening price towards your low price as time passes.

Bidders can enter bids below the current price, and as soon as the price reaches their bid amount, the auction will be closed and the winner and seller notified. If a bidder matches the current price, they will automatically win the auction and it will be closed.

Countdown Auctions are free to post. The only time you owe a fee is you choose an optional display enhancement feature (color background, page top ad, etc.).

This is the only way for you to enter a picture into your ad.

Some browsers do not support this feature. If your browser has this feature there will be a button next to the empty text box and above the button labelled "submit picture".

Commercial ads on EPage

What is a commercial ad?

A commercial ad is one that attempts to generate money or attract customers on an ongoing or repeated basis. As a guideline, if the classified relates to a business of any type (including home based and MLM), and you plan on making money via the contacts you make from an EPage classified, then the ad is a commercial ad.

For example:

  • A business looking to hire an employee is a free ad.
  • A headhunter advertising a position is a commercial ad.
  • A car dealer selling cars from his lot is commercial, but selling his personal car is free.
  • Offering a free catalog that promotes services or items for sale is a commercial ad.
  • A person selling some of their jewelry or collectibles is a free ad.
  • Selling recipies is commercial.
  • A realtor advertising a house is a commercial ad.
  • The owner of the house can post the same ad for free.
  • All "900" number ads are commercial.
  • All MLM opportunities are commercial.
